¤ Dr. Matt Miller :: Licensed Psychologist

Dr. Miller was born December 7, 1972 in Dayton, Ohio.  He was raised by strong and loving Christian parents, actively involved in his family’s local church, and gratefully educated at Dayton Christian Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade.  He invited the Lord into his life at the age of five through a Vacation Bible School program.  His lifelong goal as a young boy was to be a missionary pilot.  But the Lord directed him to a slightly different path as he grew older.  Dr. Miller attended via soccer scholarship Grace College and Theological Seminary, Winona Lake, IN, for his undergraduate education.  He majored in Psychology and Business.  He served as a resident advisor on campus and, upon graduation, was granted the Dean of Students Award for most positive contribution to student body development.  Dr. Miller thankfully met his wife Kim while attending Grace and, after dating four years, married in 1995.  Upon completion of undergraduate education, Dr. Miller completed MA and Ph.D. training in counseling and psychology at Michigan State University.  In 2000-2001 he was nominated by university faculty to represent Michigan State University as the program’s candidate for the National Student of the Year Award in Counseling Psychology.

Following completion of formal academic training at the doctoral level and still unable to completely dispose his attraction to flight, he voluntarily commissioned and served within the USAF at the active duty rank of Captain. 11 September 01 occurred within his first week of residency and immediately following completion of Officer Training School.  It created, among other things, an intense residency training climate with increased operations tempo and intensified deployment mentality.  Dr. Miller completed his residency through the United States Air Force at Wright Patterson Medical Center, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, wherein he completed rotations in outpatient mental health, neuropsychology, health psychology, emergency psychological services, and child psychology.  Following residency completion, Dr. Miller was awarded the position of Chief of the outpatient mental health clinic for the United States Air Force at Vance Air Force Base—a joint services pilot training base; he was responsible for providing psychological services to active duty members, family, and military retirees addressing a myriad of issues ranging from mood disorders to relational issues to airsickness as well as supervising day to day operations of the mental health facility and staff.  Dr. Miller also performed organizational consultation tasks with wing leadership in addition to heading wing-wide suicide and domestic violence prevention/education as well as deployment screening.  He was awarded Medical Group Officer of the Quarter on multiple occasions throughout his tenure at Vance AFB.  He was named Officer of the Year in 2003 for increasing clinic productivity to levels 300% above comparable USAF clinics and leading a multidisciplinary (flight medicine, aerospace physiology, psychology) medical treatment team in the development of pilot airsickness and stress management treatment programs that significantly reduced pilot training washout rates, saving the 71st Flying Training Wing sizeable financial and human resources and thus supporting mission manning needs.  He was awarded the Department of the Air Force Commendation Medal in 2005 for Meritorious Service.  He was also awarded a ribbon for professional efforts rendered within the Global War on Terrorism, Afghanistan theatre.

When his service commitment expired in 2005, Dr. Miller honorably separated from the USAF and returned to his wife’s home state of Michigan (obligatory apologies to mom, dad, and fellow Buckeye brethren are at this point duly rendered).  He longed to provide psychological services from a Christ-centered perspective, believing that to be the only true path to psychological health, in an environment that openly embraced such an approach and would have it no other way.  Faith Church was the place—from the “tip of the sword” of America’s military to the front lines of our Lord’s army! Incidentally, Faith was also the beloved church home of his in-laws and has now become the valued church home for he, his wife, and their four daughters.

Dr. Miller is a fully licensed psychologist in the state of Michigan.  Dr. Miller has research experience and is published in the domains of multicultural counseling training issues, including religion and psychology, and occupational satisfaction.  In total, he has garnered clinical experience in the domains of outpatient mental health, substance abuse treatment, domestic violence treatment, emergency room assessment, neuropsychology, health psychology, and child psychology.  He serves as a full-time member of the church staff, with office hours on Monday through Thursday.  He also is a member of a neuropsychological group practice in Lansing, performing neuropsych and psych evaluations every Friday.  He remains active in clinical research, coordinating ongoing research efforts with his MA and Ph.D. academic advisor at MSU.
